Whew!!! Day 2 is halfway behind me and I have so much to say that I needed to get it all out now.
I woke up this morning like “OMG Where am I!?!?” The paranoia was due in part to the fact that I drank what would probably amount to 2 full glasses of Red Wine in about 20 minutes before I went to bed (to help me sleep)
and also due to the fact that it’s one thing to wake up in a new place, but it’s another to wake up in a different country. I got it together though and got up to get my day started. I had a couple of things I needed to get accomplished this morning so I got up around 7:30am. I was starving from not eating dinner the night before so first things first I needed to find some vittles. My hotel serves breakfast so I thought “this is my chance!!! Do not miss it!” I’m still not caught up on the times that restaurants are open yet, so I knew that I didn’t want to be stuck with McDonalds for all three meals today.
I went to the buffet and this is what I saw:
Looks glorious right!? I almost did a swan dive onto the table. When I got closer I saw a selection of sliced meats and cheeses and breads. Some cereal, and little cookies and crackers. I’m sure that’s typical but y’all…. I was STARVING. The American in me was yelling “WHERE IS THE BACON!??!! (I don’t even eat pork bacon, but at that moment it felt like the only thing that could save me) I NEED EGGS!!!! (I finally located the hardboiled eggs)” I did run to the juice and I think I had about 5 glasses. The glasses themselves were like shot glasses. Thankfully there was only one other couple in there. I’m sure I looked like a fool. I’ll get it together.
Good thing I took a banana from breakfast because afterwards I went to the store, came back to the hotel, and fell asleep. Prompting me to miss the lunch hours. So I’m back to starving, however I found a little ristorante that I’ll be having dinner at tonight.
Today was adventurous because I took the bus to another part of town! The stop was by McDonalds so I went in for a nice refreshing Coke. Here’s how my conversations go (click to see it bigger)
(P.S. I’m excited to build my first meme!)
Seriously, I get all excited about saying something in Italian, and then of course they respond in Italian, but then I’m completely lost. Once that happens my idiot begins to show. I had one conversation in Italian today that went well. I asked a gentleman “Dov’e la fermata dell autobus novantauno?” (where is the Bus Stop for Bus 91?) He replied in Italian and I caught the gist of it, “across the street” LOL. But then there was a guy that picked up on my lostness and he waved me over. Here is what he said, “I can help you? america is beautiful! where you going? you want in my car?” Bless his heart. He may truly have been trying to help me, but the way he was smiling and grinding his cigarette butt, my instinct was to just get up and run. So I sputtered like an idiot and clumsily got up and ran to the bus stop.
Yesterday I didn’t notice anything too bad, but today was another day. There was a TON of staring and cat calling. It’s very odd because the staring is very outright and then you have no clue what they are saying. So it makes it even scarier than it has to be I’m sure.
I took the bus to see a room in an apartment. I enjoyed the bus ride (apparently the bus is free? I don’t know. I bought a ticket, but I didn’t see anyone swipe a ticket. Wasted $) because I got to see more of the city and one of the canals. When I got to the place I loved the location, but the apartment itself was strange and there were like 4 people in there just kickin it. It was too small for all of that. But what would have been my room was a pretty good size and price. The guy renting it spoke NO english, so our conversation went as above. He finally went and got someone, and she helped. I would have taken it because I’m that desperate, but it won’t be free for another 2 weeks and I can’t wait that long. So I left.
Top observations today:
- I swear I’m going to be a size 2 when I get back.
- I still don’t understand the culture and customs. Do I make eye contact? Do I smile at you?
- The buildings here are so pretty, but there’s a ton of graffiti on them. Weird.
- The staring is extreme. I heard black women are considered “exotic” here, but whoa who knew!? Come here to get your self-esteem up I guess ladies.
- There was girl in the bookstore singing Lil Wayne. Wow.
